Lesson Details
This page offers you some sample free guitar lessons discussing (mostly) jazz related topics. Here you’ll find material covering jazz improvisation, jazz harmony, chord development, vocabulary and rhythmic awareness all adapted from my Skype Jazz Guitar Lessons.
These free guitar lessons may also be of interest to other (non-jazz) guitarists who don’t wish to play jazz regularly, but who are interested in expanding their understanding of jazz harmony and improvisational concepts etc. I hope you find these lessons useful. Alongside the jazz orientated topics, I also have some posts here on other areas of interest to me such as guitar tones, equipment and more generic musical conversations. I hope you enjoy them anyway.
These free guitar lessons may also be useful in giving you an understanding of the type of material I can cover in my Skype Jazz Guitar Lessons, although please be aware these are mostly very short articles. Purchased Skype lessons are much more in depth and with considerably more detail and explanation of the musical concepts.
To open the various free guitar lessons, just click on either the photo or the text below and the lesson will open in a new window. In most cases I have also included a downloadable PDF (or image) for the material discussed in the lesson and there are many links to Soundslice versions of the presented material. I will be adding to this page most weeks so please check back for more posts as they become available. Please also feel free to share these posts on social media as you see fit.
Here are some major scale practice exercises that I use regularly in my own practice regime. They cover diatonic triads, intervals and seventh chord arpeggios.
Coltrane Changes refer to a series of chord changes popularised by the great jazz saxophonist John Coltrane. Learn what they are and how you can apply them over a II V I progression.
Here is a short lesson all about learning various rhythmic subdivisions. This will certainly help your soloing and accompaniment as well as your general understanding of rhythm.
Here is the first part of a short series of lessons covering bebop scales. These scales are used by many jazz musicians and can really enhance your single-note soloing skills.
